FRONTEND
SuperStreams is a travel tech spin-off from The Mobile Life that has focused on mobile development since before there were apps, and when apps were born we went all in on that, and launched our first native airline app and mobile web over ten years ago. So we dare to say we were “mobile first”, first.
We don’t make any shortcuts, and have always developed so called “native” apps (instead of using hybrid/cross platforms), that have an average 4.7+ rating across 1+ million ratings across our airline apps recently. With most logic in backend, and ready made modules and components for the frontend, why not have the best possible and most optimal mobile experience?
Across our 10+ airline app implementations, we’ve done continuous improvements and revamps to productize the platform, which makes it possible to launch a base app version for any new airline in 3 months for iOS and Android. Any airline is special, but typically at least 70% of any implementation is supported by our product and platform off the shelf, and the custom implementations are also faster because we can reuse components and expertise.
Ten years ago airline apps were almost a marketing gimmick, few people believed it would actually generate any real bookings and significantly contribute to the revenue. Nowadays any business, any industry, in any market can see that mobile traffic and revenue often make up around half or more.
SuperStreams Mobile airline apps provide an industry-leading 4-step booking flow, where the transitions, interactions and every component are optimized for the best conversion rates and to provide an intuitive mobile user experience.
This is the result of our own innovation and continuous improvements, coupled with benchmarking hundreds of airline, OTA and commerce apps. With lots of real conversion data, including experimentation and A/B testing, we know we’re at the top and can quantify what every decimal of a percent of conversion rate improvements mean in terms of increased revenue (usually millions of dollars).
We’re obsessed with letting the users complete the booking flow as quickly and frictionlessly as possible, still with all ancillary options intuitively presented, and then drive post booking ancillary upsell, via the dynamic home screen, the check-in flow and Manage My Booking (MMB), as well as push notifications.
Powered by SuperStreams Data platform, our airline apps can look and feel different based on behavior (analytics), interests, preferences, and context, such as geography, timing, market and where the user is in its customer journey. Gone are the days of static apps that always look the same.
Many talk about data and show nice dashboards and graphs around it (that we also have), but it is the use cases real customers see in their apps that really matter. For airline apps we can enable this across a number of areas, such as a dynamic home screen with different modules/cards turned on or off and with differing ordering to provide the best match for the user, as well as ancillary and payment method prediction scoring and ordering, among others.
Three levels of stickiness are relevant for digital personalization depending on how much data we have:
1. Popular/Trends - for first time users. Instead of showing static lists, order them based on what is most searched, viewed or purchased.
2. Preferences - remember what I did, what I like. Prefill as much as possible based on previous interactions and behavior.
3. Recommendations - things I should like, but don’t know yet. We have a recommendation engine that can predict what you may like based on cross referencing with other user and data segments.
While the Web often fills the role of user acquisition, the App is the best tool for user retention. Therefore the app can be seen as your new loyalty card with direct access to self service. A mobile app user is king for any airline.
Mobile check-in and mobile boardingpasses is the golden mobile use case, at least used twice as often as mobile bookings, and not just for originally mobile users.
Our check-in flow is native with as much as possible prefilled from the PNR, profiles or passport scanner. The ancillaries addon step will intuitively display what’s already part of the booking, and make it possible to easily add/change and pay for any extra ancillaries needed.
Often hazardous material and health declaration forms are included, and optionally it’s possible to integrate with document check APIs such as ICTS and Timatic. Mobile boardingpasses are always offline enabled and can easily be added to Apple Wallet or Google Pay.
Manage My Booking (MMB) is accessed from My Trips and the itinerary in the app, as well as from the Dynamic Home, and can include a number of different flows depending on needs. The most common of those are Add Ancillaries, Change Flight (Date), Change Pax/Contact details, Cancel & Refund, with optional payment step, and could also be combined with push notification triggers as part of the customer journey.
Mobile check-in and MMB also help drive indirect to direct traffic, when outside users from travel agencies, OTAs and meta searches need to do self service. Once any PNR is loaded into the app all the associated profile details are automatically stored locally, and available for prefill in super fast repeat bookings. Then we can nudge the user to also login or sign up as a member, which will auto sync those profiles to the PSS and/or Member system and available cross platform.
Any other self service functionality can be made available, such as flight status, airport, terminal and gate information and pushes, destination guides, various content pages and FAQ, contact and chat options, and so on, depending on the airline’s needs. Most of these we already have ready-made modules and components for that can be easily configured and implemented quickly.
Our repository of modules and components are constantly added to, improved and iterated upon, and can be put together almost like LEGO blocks. For instance, if an airline would like a more long winding booking flow, with fare classes sold separately after flights selected and/or with one step per ancillary to force users to always consider those, we also support that.
Even within existing modules and flows there are various tried and tested components that can be combined to create different user experiences, e.g. whether to display one-way/roundtrip toggle or not, and which interaction variation of stations and calendar pickers to be used. These are user and A/B tested, and most of them have run live, which gives us data to explain the pros and cons with each option.
Through our Lab we constantly try out new ideas and technologies, and often airlines ask us to experiment with new features and functions. In most cases we can pick that up as part of our R&D and have the cost shared with SuperStreams and/or other customers.
